From the Foster:
Wednesday is a pure bred Newfoundland. She was released from a breeder due to poor knees in October and has since become a part of our family and found her way into our hearts. With that said, our most important job is to find Wednesday the right forever home that will love her and take care of all of her needs.
Since we have taken Wednesday in, she has had both of her back knees surgically repaired (bilateral tibial tuberosity advancements). Though this has repaired her knees, she will still need restricted activities – no jumping, no playing, limited stairs, and limited activities – for at least a few more months until she has fully healed. She has been wonderful with her recovery, and has surprised her doctors with how well she is coming along. She weighs around 95-100lbs (she mostly consists of hair!) and will need to be kept on the leaner side to help maintain her back legs. Wednesday has chronic allergies which have led to itchy feet and ear infections. She is currently on an allergy medication (Apoquel) that is working great, but it is a bit pricy.
Wednesday is the biggest love. She will dole out huge kisses (and sometimes even bath you if given the opportunity!). She gets along well with all other dogs and will often try to play with them, although given her size and history; this will need to be limited. Wednesday would do best in a home where she won’t be the only ‘child’, as she loves having doggy siblings around. She is cat friendly as well. She does well with all people, but she can be a bit clumsy and get overly excited and run into you and/or knock you with her head. Thus older, more considerate children would be preferred.
As Wednesday lived a different life as a breeder dog, she is still learning and experiencing new things all the time and will need some guidance and encouragement with these things. She does still need work on her manners and obedience, but she has come a long way with us so far. Wednesday has been on and off with her potty training. She will go for months being great, and then she will have a set back and start to have accidents in the house. She can hold it for long periods of time, she just chooses not to sometimes. This will be something that will need continuous work. She is also a bit of a chewer. We often use a soft muzzle for her so that she can stay out during the day, while we don’t have to worry about her chewing on anything. She can be crated, but is not the biggest fan of it.
Wednesday is the sweetest dog and deserves nothing but the best in her forever family. With a little work and some patient understanding, she promises to be an amazing addition to the right family.
